Hello :-)

Here we go for number 43…already!

But before starting informing you all, I would like to send my apologies to
the coordinators of the Nordit project
http://www.vennesla.vgs.no/nordit/nordit.htm
When I presented it last time, I forgot to mention Sweden in the list of
partners, and I certainly do not want to start another Nordic war!

We also have a job offer from France this week:
The director of a primary school in France is looking for a teacher. His/her
native language should be English. The children are 5 years old.
If you think you have the right profile and if you are tempted by this
pedagogical adventure, please contact the director and let us know about the
wonderful ICT projects you will experiment with very young children:
J.Y. Thiry
jy.thiry@infonie.be

My kindest regards to you all
Brigitte

              What’s On in Europe?

Le Salon de l’Education, Paris

The French Salon de l’Education took place in Paris from November 22 to 26.
Some members of the European Schoolnet office visited the exhibition and
attended meetings. We all agree to say that it was a European event of high
quality. It was focused on Education as such, tackling different angles of
interest to teachers, pupils, special needs educators, head teachers,
inspectors and policy makers. The stands covered all the examples of use of
ICT at school, services, publications, tools, online environments that are
available nowadays and facilitate access to resources and collaborative
initiatives.
A special stand was devoted to European projects, some of which you will
find further down this newsletter.
Please take a look at the site and make contacts to know more about
innovation in education:

Netd@ys 2000

Netd@ys 2000 week was launched on November 23 at the Explor@dome of Paris.
All day long, children were able to discover the granted projects from 13
different European countries.
Netd@ys 2000 has been a great success. There were over 5m hits to its
website in a short period of time, thousands of organisations participated
and more than 70 countries were involved. Australia, Brazil, Canada, Israel
and Switzerland, for example, all created special Netd@ys activities.
Netd@ys has helped the participants to make contacts with others all from
all over the world, exchanging ideas and sharing experiences.

__________CALLS FOR COLLABORATION_____________

              Work Together

Special Needs Project, Slovenia

This primary school for pupils with special needs is located in Skofja Loka,
Slovenia. The pupils are between 8 - 15 years old. They are looking for
partners with a similar profile in other European countries to set up
student-centered projects. The pupils can only use plain English.

French-Spanish Exchange, UK

A group of 13-15 year old pupils learning French as a second language is
looking for European partners to learn and exchange in French and Spanish.
This would be a way to stimulate motivation while using ICT.
The themes will be chosen once the team is together.
Contact Esther via email at:
emonso@teleline.es

_________________________________________________

Multi-thematic Exchange, Italy

Here are the themes proposed by this very active school situated in Sicily:
European unity, Europe once and nowadays, friendship and cooperation, music
and folklore, real cultural exchanges, a glance at Europe, great European
cities and villages.

If any of these topics suit your teaching, feel free to contact the
coordinator and join in.

Hosting a Meeting on European Values, Italy

In collaboration with the European Commission, “Team Europe”, a European
association, is organising meetings in a certain number of schools about
European values and the enlargement. They are looking for two schools to
help organize and host meetings to take place beginning of 2001.

Gender and HIV, Voices of Youth

Is it true that cultural notions about 'masculinity' encourage young men
more than young women to engage in risky behaviour? As World AIDS Day
approaches, join the Gender and HIV/AIDS web discussion

project, Voices of Youth!

Short Term Email Exchange in French, The Netherlands

The Stedelijk Gymnasium Haarlem, Haarlem (The Netherlands) is looking for
secondary schools to set up short term email exchange projects (5-6 weeks)
on general information about the pupils hobbies, school systems, schools and
countries.
It is simple but it can trigger more projects in the future. This is a good
opportunity for the teachers who want to start using ICT and making
contacts. The exchange should be done in French.

Two calls from Italy, Secondary Level

"The web from the students point of view": for 14-15 year old pupils.
The purpose of this project is to ask students to search the web for
resources that they find useful. Then the team will make a web page and the
links will be available to all European schools.

" Let's open the doors of our town": for 16-17 year old pupils.
Here the objective is to ask pupils to produce a portal of their town
describing the places to visit, the schools, the universities, the useful
services around their city, the hotels, the restaurants and so on.

Two very formative and informative initiatives. Join in!

Wine Culture, Hungary

The Táncsics Mihály Gimnázium Mór secondary school, Hungary, intends to
prepare a special project in English focusing on wine culture and traditions
connected to this topic. They are looking for two partner schools,
preferably situated in wine making areas. This school has a long experience
in the use of ICT, they are well equipped and open to European cooperation.
A wonderful topic for catering schools…and others!

Recipes From Europe, Italy

This primary school teacher would like to gather all kinds of European
recipes and organise cooking and tasting sessions with his young pupils at
the school’s restaurant.
What a good idea! You must help him…and why not do the same in your school?

Cooperation with Baltic Countries

The main goal is to encourage students to compile and study facts about
three Baltic states, to look for useful material and to translate it into
English.
At a time when the enlargement of Europe is in all programmes, it is
important to trigger co-operation among schools from the EU and the ones
from Baltic countries - Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania - in order to
highlight the recent historical events that opened a new way of life for
them.

e-Français, Belgium

A team of teachers from Belgium have put together a very high quality portal
for teachers and students of French. The site provides resources, forums, a
writing contest. A site to bookmark!
The project was presented with great success at the French Salon de l’
Education.

Kids’ Dictionary, Germany

Another very nice project highlighted by the Salon de l’Education in Paris:
an online dictionary made for children by children. I would personally be
happy to see this project expand and become multilingual!
Take a look at the site:

Young Reporters for the Environment, Latest News

This year, 200 European schools (140 last year) will be involved in
activities about environmental issues (agriculture, cities, coastline,
energy, waste, water).
Out of this total, 130 schools will be involved in a co-operation with other
European schools. Since the 1st of November, these schools are in the
process of connecting to each other, in order to set up international teams.
The whole network is hosted on a web site where advanced co-operative tools
are provided to the participants.

Those who wish to participate are invited to contact the national operators
of the programme on the web site : http://www.youngreporters.org

Multimedia in Hospitals, Italy

Last example of the very good projects we had a chance to discover in Paris:
Operating in the school section of a hospital requires the teachers to pay
particular attention not only to the learning needs of the hospitalized
student, but also to his/her psycho-physical and emotional needs.
The project is intended to improve study methods and to emphasise the
expressive potentialities of the students who refuse or do not use the
verbal language in the appropriate way. It has run now for three years and
you may read more about the experience on the web site (in Italian and
English). This initiative is a good contact point for those among you who
teach in similar environments.

Maths, Lesson Plans

A French site about the teaching of mathematics. Well, if you do not speak
French, maths is a universal language, isn’t it?
This French teacher offers a whole site with forums, information on
evaluation, resources and lesson plans grouped in age levels.
We welcome this initiative and invite all teachers of maths to contribute so
this site become European.

Philosophy and Culture

This site is available to teachers of French and philosophy. It proposes
resources on philosophy, literature, art, ancient history and culture in
general. You may also use their forum and chat facilities.
A very interesting site for your pupils to search for information, and for
you to complement your lesson plans.

European Space Agency Competition

Use your creative energies to create a global flag, and maybe you'll win a
chance to see it launched into space! The European Space Agency has
organised this competition to find a new flag to decorate the side of the
Ariane 5 rocket.
The winner will be flown to French Guyana to watch the launch.

Children aged eight to ten years old are invited to create their own version
of a global flag. The winning picture will decorate the side of the Ariane
launcher, when the new Earth observation satellite, Envisat, is sent into
space.
The winner watches at the base in Kourou.

Fifteen runners up will also be selected - one from each European member
country, and one from Canada. They will each receive a computer and printer.
The competition closes on 31st March 2001.
