Dear all,

Here is the latest issue on the EUN Teachers' Newsletter: some very
important items concerning the eSchola initiative, many calls for
partnership and the whole new set of European funded training schemes.
We also propose a section on new activities in myEUROPE. Please note that
these activities are especially designed for the myEurope Schools network.
We invite you to join and participate.

Excellent news for our Catalan colleagues: this newsletter is now available
in Catalan, thanks to the help of the AEIC "Association of Computing
Teachers from Catalonia".
This newsletter is accessible online from:
http://www.aeic.es/arxius/butlle44.htm

We warmly thank Ms Victnria Oliu, the AEIC Webmaster, for letting us know
about this new version!

Kind regards
Brigitte

Teachers Seminar in Brussels

All the members of the myEurope advisory group, together with
representatives from the Virtual School and the European Network of
Innovative Schools, came to spend January 27 and 28 with us in Brussels and
attended a very special "eSchola" seminar.

Ulf Lundin, our Director and the general coordinator of the eSchola
initiative introduced the project. Angela Andersson, the eSchola executive
coordinator, lead the seminar. The rest of the team, Magnus, Petru, John,
Margit, Tor and I helped the group of "super teachers" create, share and
make proposals for the coming event.
National networks were also represented in the persons of Reinhold Hawle,
Ministry of Education Austria and Isabel Oliveira, Ministry of Education
Portugal.

Our focus was set on three major pedagogical strands:
Demonstrating examples of good practice
Online teaching
Collaborating around the theme "Europe Across Time and Space"

European Schoolnet eLearning Awards 2001

The 2001 European Schoolnet eLearning Awards are designed to show how
teachers are successfully using technology to improve teaching and learning
in schools across Europe. They reward innovation that increases learning
opportunities and can be adopted by others.

What are the categories?

1. eSchool Awards

For a school or group of schools systematically using the Internet and
other technology to improve the learning environment for all students, and
provide wider learning opportunities. The entry might be a web site or
Intranet used to support organisational change or to increase access to
learning opportunities.

2. eTeaching Awards

For teachers making innovative use of ICT in teaching. An entry might be
teaching modules, a project, online courses or multimedia material.

3. myEUROPE Awards

For a teacher or a school successfully teaching about Europe, its
institutions and European citizenship. Entries could be collaborative
projects, worksheets, teaching modules or multimedia resources that raise
pupils' interest, and increase understanding of Europe.

4. eTeacher Training Awards

This category is for a teacher training institution, consortium,
municipality or school that takes innovative approaches to develop
teachers' skills in using the Internet and other information technologies
as learning tools. An entry could be a course scheme, an in-service
training arrangement or a collaborative project aimed at enabling teachers
to make full use of the potential of new technologies.

Who can enter?

Teachers, schools and teacher training organisations anywhere in Europe.
Entries may be in any language.

Find all information soon at:
http://eschola.eun.org
Closing date 11 May 2001.

"Say I love you"

Apart from learning, what do kids do during all those school years? They
fall in love!

Saint Valentine is an opportunity for all language teachers to ask their
pupils to write love poems in their own language or another. We want
rhyming poems, of course!

The activity, complementary links and online tool for contributions will
soon be online from the myEUROPE website.

http://myeurope.eun.org

_____

Pretty Europe!

Open your eyes and look! Isn't your town or village the prettiest in
Europe? Yes it certainly is :-)
Share this beautiful spot with European friends.

This activity will build a European gallery of pretty European spots and
help travelers make up the best route across Europe.

Here is how to proceed:
Identify the prettiest place in your environment, take pictures and share
them with the class.
Compose a text presenting this place, it's special features, it's
historical/geographical/cultural value and try to attract visitors from
other countries. Imagine that you are writing for a Tourist Information guide.

http://myeurope.eun.org
_____

Clean Up Europe!

The main goal of this activity is to make the pupils aware of that their
views matter. That they can influence the decision makes. The secondary
goal is to make them more aware of their surrounding environment.

They write letters by developing a persuasive argument on an issue of
concern to them. Pupils will become part of the European voice,
highlighting the main concerns of youngest people of the continent related
to the environment protection.

Pupils take photos of a run-down area or street in their town/village. Then
they write a letter to the mayor. Letters should be respectful and clearly
explain what the problem is and also should include children views on
possible solutions.

myEurope Schools Network

The myEUROPE network is now a group of nearly 500 schools. Those schools
have all voluntarily registered online. They have their own environment,
tools and activities. They can submit projects and resources as well as
take part in the different activities we propose.

MyEUROPE is also a team of experts based at the EUN office in Brussels who
work in very close collaboration with a unique group of teachers who help
them design projects and disseminate the project in their own countries.

Please, take a look at their site and visit the very active partnerfinding
forum.

The Big Myth

'The Big Myth' is a collection of cross-cultural world creation myths,
designed for comparative study. Each myth is animated using Flash
technology, so it is important that the school or home accessing the site
has a browser (Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer) of 3.0 or higher,
as well as the Shockwave Player Plug-In, which is free to download on the
Macromedia site. One of the most important aspects of this site is to
introduce children to the web, and allow them to feel comfortable with the
Internet as a tool for research, inspiration and creative learning.

Digital Lunar Orbiter Photographic Atlas of the Moon

The Lunar and Planetary Institute (LPI) has created a digital version of
the Lunar Orbiter Photographic Atlas of the Moon, published in 1971 and
considered "the definitive reference manual to the global photographic
coverage of the
Moon." The site includes all 675 plates contained in the original work,
digitally enhanced to increase photo quality.

'trans-mission', Video Competition, Austria

'trans-mission' is a video competition for pupils throughout Europe as part
of the European Year of Languages 2001. European schools are invited to
take part. It will be implemented and produced by the Federal Ministry of
Education, Science and Culture, Department of Media Education.

The goal of 'trans-mission' is to encourage interest in language learning
and to increase media competence. At the same time 'trans-mission' offers
pupils and teachers an opportunity to communicate throughout Europe, make
creative and innovative contributions and use the results in language classes.
The submissions can be video works in any genre. They should be relevant,
innovative, amusing, original, exciting, interesting, emotional and / or
experimental. Mini dramas are just as welcome as language courses as long
as they are unusual contributions to the subject.

Balbelnet Spanish

The first event for Spanish Babelnet has gone online.
Learners (individual or groups) are asked to build a web page about the
place where their school is in order to invite "Carlitos" to come and see
that place. So they should point out all the places of interest in their
town and present them in a pleasant way. Guidelines, participation rules
and more information on the topic can be found under the html-address above
mentioned. Of course there are prices waiting for the best five contributions.
