Dear colleagues,
Brussels is sunny and Spring is slowly showing the first signs of renewal
in Southern Europe. This is so stimulating!
Before dealing with the very rich list of news items I have gathered for
you this week, I would like to send a special call. The European
Commission’s web site on Environment offers a very interesting set of
resources and activities for schools. In order to better develop
environmental awareness among young Europeans, the communication group
would like to set up a small international team of teachers who have a good
experience of technologies and environmental projects and who would meet
and play the role of European advisors. If you are interested, please
contact me directly and give me a short description of your background. I
will forward the information to the right people.
My best regards to you all, you are doing one of the most wonderful jobs in
the world!

Recommendations on Quality Resources for Teachers
Getting resources from the web, fine, but what about their quality? Some
people at the EUN office have worked for months on this issue. Please take
a look at their work, it is for you!
New publication on the Quality Assessment of Web-based Learning Resources.
Especially the 3rd section might be interesting reading for teachers who
use the Internet and other digital resources in their teaching. The writer
is a Swedish teacher Günther Dippe who produced the report within the
framework of European Treasury Browser.
http://www.eun.org/etb/survey/d3.2_html#_Toc1549650
The same report includes a check list that teachers could use when
selecting Web-based Learning Resources. Of course none of the existing list
is exhausted, only one to use, but this one will remind you of useful point
to keep in mind. To mention a few: Accuracy, Appropriateness, Clarity...
http://www.eun.org/etb/survey/d3.2_html#_Toc1549664
There is also a section of Web tools containing a list of useful tools on
the web that teachers can use for link checking, security, and management
tools.
http://www.eun.org/etb/survey/d3.2_html#_Toc1549667
In the end of the report a list gives links to European and American web
resources.

European Network of Innovative Schools (ENIS) Meeting
On 25-26 February 2002 in Montecatini (a nice thermal town close to Pisa in
Toscana) the Italian ENIS group will meet, to renew the Italian ENIS
network. In June 2000 the Italian Action Plan for Information Society was
launched, including new measures and investments in the education world.
The priorities in new Italian educational policy are teacher training and
improvement of schooling through ICT. Innovative schools will play an
important role. Best practices will be proposed as useful models and they
will indicate trends and priorities of the technical and pedagogical needs
of schools. Innovative schools should be seen as laboratories researching
for new educational practices. The Montecatini meeting comes close before
TED (27 February to 1 March 2002 in Genoa) the largest exhibition of
education technology in Italy.
During the meeting in Montecatini ENIS schools from all over Europe will
share their experiences in their national ENIS network and put together new
European collaborations
For general information, the ENIS contact at the EUN office is:

Internet Safety Materials
The Internet is supposed to be changing the way we live, work and learn for
the better.
However, there are increasing concerns about the negative aspects,
especially for children.
The .Safe project has been selecting the best internet security material
for children during the last year. It is offering teachers the opportunity
to receive this pedagogical material for their daily practice in schools
and make children aware of responsible and safe use in the Internet.
The material is build up on a core set of pedagogical and technical
solutions. If you are interested in using this material and test it with
your school (children and/or teachers), please send an email to

Anti Racist Resources, UNO
The United Nations’ education web site “Cyberschoolbus” offers a very nice
set of resources about one of our global ” plagues”: racism. The respect of
the others unfortunately needs to be taught over and over again at home and
at school. This web site can help you find teaching materials and ideas on
this painful topic.
http://www0.un.org/cyberschoolbus/racism2001/orglinks.asp

ICARE, Anti Racism Europe
This web site deals with documents and reports on anti-racism and most
texts are available in at least English and French, sometimes Spanish. An
interesting feature is a partner finding service for people who wish to get
involved in projects related to this theme. Take a look and find what you
need there!

For some time, the mass media overwhelmed the world with a huge AIDS
prevention campaign, then things calmed down and young people became less
aware of this terrible threat. I thought I could select a couple of sites
on this subject to help revive HIV awareness among schools in my own humble
way. I personally feel that it is crucial for teachers to focus on this
subject every year as many parents still feel uneasy about tackling this
issue at home.
**********************************************************************
AIDS Prevention, World Bank
Two decades after the appearance of HIV, an estimated 11.7 million people
have died of AIDS-related causes. The World Bank and other international
organisations recognise AIDS as a global development problem that must be
tackled for the benefit of all peoplerich and poor, young and old.
This web site offers you games, documents, videos and useful links for your
pupils

AIDS, Suicide, Drugs Prevention, in French
HIV, violence at school and at home, suicide, drugs, health are problems
that directly touch millions of school children. This web site in French
can help you think of ways to tackle these painful issues with your pupils.

Project Creation Call, Germany
Here is a very warm direct call for partnership!
“After our first project in 1998 we'd now like to start one again with
other partners in other countries. During my last week private trip to
Finland I made a contact with a school there which may be successful. But
we would like to meet others.
Our Benjamin-Franklin-Oberschule is a traditional 'Realschule' in
Berlin-Reinickendorf with about 600 students from 12 to 16. The languages
taught in our school are English and French. I’ve been working here for 2
years now, before that I was teaching at a Comprehensive School in Berlin
where I was responsible for the European Projects. My present school has
never worked on a European Project before.
I would be very happy if youhelped us with information or answered our call
for partnership.
I'm looking forward to hearing from you
Yours
Jutta Hugow”

Email Exchange with German Speakers
Bodil is a Swedish teacher with a group of 30 pupils aged 17 who are very
eager to correspond with European friends in German. He is looking for
partner schools in Germany, Austria or Switzerland, but I am sure he would
welcome other German learners if you contact him.

International Aboriginal Art Competition
This is a very original project which can stimulate art classes but also
inspire some of you. The principle can be easily adapted and lead to
fantastic creative projects.
They want your students to use Australian Aboriginal style art to represent
something from their own culture or country. This could be an animal a
landmark, statue, natural wonder or any other aspect of culture from their
country: for example the Taj Mahal from India, a lion from Africa, the
Statue of Liberty from America...a sombrero from Mexico...the Pyramids of
Egypt...the possibilities are endless
The International Aboriginal Art Competition will be run from Jan 10th 2002
till June 30th 2002.

Human Genetics
This is an American project that can be interesting for some of you who
teach genetics at secondary school. The problem is of course that it is in
English and it may be a good idea to get your colleagues involved!
Here is what it’s all about:
Let's ask a lot of people all over the world which traits they have. One
way for students to learn how their physical characteristics, or traits,
are inherited is by gathering a great deal of information about specific,
easily-seen human features. Students can analyse this information to
determine which traits are controlled by dominant genes and how often such
dominant genes occur.
During this project, students will complete surveys, formulate hypotheses,
and use the data compiled by students around the globe to test their
hypotheses.

MultiDICO, Comenius Project
A multimedia & multicultural on-line dictionary for roman languages made by
students aged 11 to 16!
Each school will produce dictionary entries for a series of basic words
using text, drawings and sounds. Other schools will add links to their
respective mother languages.
This on-line tool will possibly lead to a CD-ROM version.
The project will take place in French language only and is due to start on
August 1st 2002. This is a long term project. The first year (2002-2003)
will be a preparatory one including a preliminary visit in Romania. The
project itself will begin in 2003-2004 and should be continued in 2004-2005
and 2005-2006.
4 schools have already accepted to participate. We are looking for 6
others, preferably from southern countries (France, Spain, Italy, Greece)
but anyone ready to jump in this ambitious project is welcome!

LIPSS Transition Problem from Primary to secondary Education
Across Europe, from 1987 onwards, a variety of project groups, governmental
organisations and parent committees have worked on the problem of the
transition from primary to secondary education. In 1999 a project group
consisting of Cyprus, Germany, England and Poland was established, within
the framework of a Comenius Action 2 programme, in order to translate
theory into practice. The results of this project are to be published. An
overview of the theoretical background has been documented in Manual 1. On
the first page of this book (Manual 2) you can find a short summary of
Manual 1 in the languages of all the project partners.
Manual 2 focuses on putting theory into practice. It provides all school
partners (parents, students, teachers and senior managers) with practical
examples of how to facilitate the transition from primary to secondary
school using co-operative processes.
Manual 3, which is due to be published in 2002, suggests models for
in-service teacher training and explores the possibilities of initiating
change using models that have already proved successful in different countries.
In April 2003 (April 5th to 11th) SWINDON you can participate a very
interesting Comenius 2 Course!

Bullying and Environmental Issues Information Request
Hiroko Togo works in England and she is looking for information about
environmental and bullying issues in primary and lower secondary schools:
- Success environmental awareness stories
- Success stories to stop inter-racial bullying
- Drop out schools in Europe
She is gathering this information in order to write a report for the
Japanese authorities. Indeed there seems to be problems related to these
issues in Japan and they are trying to find ways to integrate them to the
curriculum
It is important to help her with our personal experience. Contact her at:
