Dear all,
Hope you are all very well and enjoying the longer days. Unfortunately
longer days and warmer weather go with exams and heavy piles of papers to
mark! Well, try to work outside if you can ;-)
As you will see, this newsletter is mainly composed of calls for
collaboration. Many schools in all kinds of countries are very eager to
share with other schools at pan-European level and contact me personally to
expand their virtual territory, to enlarge their understanding of cultural
diversity and to use new technologies for communication.
During a trial period, a new section (“only for you”) will be featured and
give you access to resources, projects, web sites only available in your own
language. As I only speak English and French, I can only promote the
resources I understand and check for educational quality.
This idea was suggested to me by some European colleagues and I am happy to
try it. Nevertheless, it is clear that our mission here at the European
Schoolnet is to be pan-European and we focus on helping schools collaborate,
get to know each other and create together.
Please tell me what you think of all this. You are the ones to decide, this
newsletter is for you and nothing will be changed against your wish. I will
reply to all emails as usual :-)
Kindly yours
Brigitte

they go wrong. eXplora is open to all the pupils who want to build a
state-of-the-art multimedia web site and get a chance to spend time with all
the other European winners. Dynamise your pupils and tell them about

European Discoveries Encyclopaedia
As part of the eSchola event, pupils aged 8 to 14 are invited to take part
in compiling an encyclopedia of Europe's major scientific discoveries and
inventions, tracing the history of the foundation stones of modern science.
During 2001-2002, various classes have already written the first pages of
this history. This year, we expect new contributions from all countries. The
French, Italian, Portuguese and Swiss schools will benefit of pedagogical
assistance during the year.
Throughout this project, pupils must carry out documentary research into a
major scientific discovery or invention in their own country and reproduce
the phenomenon in their class using locally available material. They will
have to produce documents in the language of their country and will form the
first pages of an encyclopedia of European scientific discoveries to which
additions will be made year after year.
To see what it is all about and register, go to:

Thinking Classroom, Call for Papers
The journal Thinking Classroom (also published in Russian) serves as an
international forum of exchange among teachers, teacher educators and others
interested in promoting democratic teaching practices. All potential
authors are invited to submit papers that encourage professional
development, research and reflection. Thinking Classroom features articles
that foster learner-centered teaching strategies including critical and
creative thinking, active and cooperative learning, and problem solving.
The journal also publishes articles about the institutional structures that
support these practices.

Seeking Teachers for Collaboration with Israel
Chaim is working and has been working for many years in very difficult
conditions as he has chosen to trigger collaboration between muslim and
jewish pupils, teachers and school principals. I admire what he does a lot.
He is looking for contacts to discuss all issues related to education, the
relationship between teachers and principals, etc. It may seem like a small
thing, but as the African proverb goes “the river is big, but it always
needs a drop of water”
Contact him!

Biome Project on Ecosystems
The purpose of this project is to provide students with a standard method of
investigating the biomes in which they live, a way of publishing their
scientific findings on the World Wide Web for others to view, a site where
they can obtain comparative data from other biomes around the world and a
chance to integrate computer skills with ecological sampling skills.

New Babelnet Contest in Spanish
What does it mean to each of us to be dressed in a fashionable way? Is our
styling an expression of our way of thinking? Are there any problems young
people may have because of the way they dress? All these questions will be
dealt in the Forum. The best contributions get a prize, as usual. This time
the four best contributions get a CD. The event runs from April 22nd to May
30th.

Travelling Elk Project
A Swedish school is looking for schools from all around the world to host
their “elk” for a couple of weeks. Read the message!
“We have this teddy bear (teddy elk to be correct) and we have given him the
mission to travel all around the world to find answers to different
questions and learn more about different cultures.
If you chose to take part in the project we will send the elk in a package
to your school. When he arrives he has some assignments with him and he
needs your students’ help. Your students should take digital pictures of him
in different settings and situations and also write his diary, in English,
for the days he spends at your school. After one week we would like you to
send the material (images and text) to us by e-mail and we will put it on
our project website for all the world to see and read.”

Exchange with Business School, Denmark
This is a call from a business college in Denmark with about 1,000 young
students aged 16-19, where English and IT are just two of the important
subjects that students have to take. Here is how they would like to start:
have students communicate via e-mail in English, introduce themselves, tell
each other about their school life, leisure time, sports, hobbies, etc.
Eventually, they could travel and meet each other and work together on a
project. How do you like that idea?

News in Your Language Only

Who is your language editor?
Well we have been in contact for many years for some of you! My name is
Brigitte Parry, I was a teacher of English in France for 17 years in
secondary, adult and higher education. I was also a teacher trainer for some
time. I got my first email address about 12 years ago and discovered with
childish amazement the communication potential of the Internet. Then some 7
years ago I, with a team of European teachers, set up one of the first
international collaborative project using the Internet and that was another
wonderful breakthrough for me. For the last 3-4 years I have been working
for the European Schoolnet, trying to inform you, help you find ideas and
partners via this newsletter and our many collaborative projects.
For personal information, I have two children: Pierre, 16, still at
secondary school and Cécile, 20, who studies anthropology at university.

Victorian Times
Objects and images from Tiverton Museum's collection are brought together to
allow pupils to see how life was in Victorian times.
Sections allow visitors to see the daily routine of a family, view newspaper
clippings, e-mail questions to a 'virtual Victorian' and play with toys too
fragile to touch in the museum.

The Canada Centre for Remote Sensing, and the Canadian Wildlife Service,
with assistance from corporate sponsors, Space for Species is a Web-based
learning program that brings science and technology to life. Through Space
for Species, you can explore the role of satellite telemetry, remote
sensing, astronaut observations, and weather satellites in wildlife
conservation. All these "eyes in the sky," in combination, provide a
panoramic view of wild wayfarers.
You will create migration maps, record climatological and habitat data, and
keep your own field notes as part of a tracking journal, science project, or
even a recovery plan. You can explore the role of scientific inquiry in
conservation, get acquainted Bob Thirsk, and an array of other experts, and
learn about careers in the field where space and species meet.
